Tobacco Industry Targets Youth
In Santa Clara County, the Santa Clara Valley Department of Alcohol and Drug Services (DADS) funds Friday Night Live through NCADD in the Silicon Valley (the Santa Clara County Affiliate of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence)
FNL is based on a Youth Development philosophy: the ongoing process in which young people are engaged in building skills, attitudes, knowledge, and experiences that prepare them for the future. FNL program components consist of chapters, outreach, skill building and opportunities for developing leadership.
Some of the program principles are that FNL is youth driven and youth led, develops skills and resilient traits, builds community partnerships to support youth, provides meaningful and caring relationships among youth and with adults, and demonstrates cultural competency. Examples of FNL Standards of Practice are that young people will experience a safe environment; youth will have opportunities for involvement and connection to community and school, and have opportunities to practice leadership and advocacy.
Santa Clara County's Friday Night Live (FNL) program has been busy this last fiscal year.
There are several FNL Chapters. Each of these Chapters has leaders who belong to the Santa Clara County Youth Council.
The Coalition Against Teen Tobacco (CATT) and Santa Clara County Friday Night Live youth participated in a Summer Retreat at Santa Cruz Beach in August 2005. The 2-day camp was filled with team-building activities, survival skills, and goal setting/planning for the school year. Friday Night Live youth from Yerba Buena, Oak Grove, Silver Creek, Santa Teresa, and Mount Pleasant High Schools were present among the participants attending this intimate camp-style retreat.
Youth from Santa Clara County attended the California Youth Advocacy Network's 8th Annual Advanced Youth Advocacy Conference in August, 2005 in Santa Cruz. Youth and adults learned more about enhancing local and statewide youth advocacy programs and attended numerous workshops about tobacco.
The Santa Clara County FNL Coordinator, Bobby Lorilla, attended the FNL Bi-annual Consortium in August, 2005. He facilitated outreach workshops to new coordinators and was involved in planning the conference. He was recently awarded the California Friday Night Live Partnership Character Counts Award.
Countywide New Year's Eve Lock-In for Teens funded by Traffic Safe Communities Network
Over 200 people attended the multi-activity event. The press coverage (Bay City News (twice), San Jose Mercury News (Twice), KLIV, KQED, KGO (twice), Channel 11, 4, 5, and 7) boosted last minute attendance. Richard Santana, the guest speaker at 10pm was extremely well received. He is a 3rd generation gang member who pulled himself out of the lifestyle and attended Harvard University. His talk begins with him acting as if he was still a gang member and then as the talk progresses his language becomes more educated and he takes his gang clothing off revealing a suit. After his talk youth participated in a variety of activities: Karaoke, Salsa, pool, basketball, movies, Talent Show and the most popular was Karaoke. There was plenty of food and beverages donated by PW Markets, a local store on Jackson and Alum Rock - thank you so much!!!!!!!
Bobby Lorilla is the regional liaison for the Bay Area region 2 Friday Night Live Partnership. He is responsible for maintaining the communication between all 9 Bay Area Counties with the State FNL Partnership office. He plans and facilitates regional meetings and helps plan regional activities such and advisor retreats, where advisors learn more about FNL.
Teenwork is a statewide training institute for teens that deals with all teen issues expressed, performed, or discussed in workshops, keynote presentations, and group work. It is held once a year alternating each year between Northern and Southern California. Bobby is part of the California Youth Council's Dream Team. This distinguished group helps the California Youth Council (CYC) plan for Teenwork every year. The CYC is comprised of youth leaders representing most of the counties in California. They are chosen by the Teenwork Board of Directors and are highly recommended by local youth advisors through experience in advocacy and leadership. Teenwork is youth run by the CYC, and the adult allies for these CYC members are the Dream Team members. The California FNL Partnership selects Dream Team members by the experience of working with youth.

This chapter, which started in October 2002, not long after the beginning of the school year. FNL has been infused into their anti-tobacco club on campus. The group meets every week, which normally attracts 40members who have been building their leadership capacity.
NCADD's Friday Night Live Coordinator, Bobby Lorilla, has been working with the Independence FNL chapter to boost their ability to work together as a group by using FNL team building activities. These activities have enhanced individual memberâs confidence, communication skills, and have strengthened their relationships with each other.
As a result, the leaders decided to implement presentations on tobacco issues to the freshman classes in their own school and to surrounding middle schools. Chapter leaders have been undergoing training on how to prepare and deliver public speaking engagements. To date they have already conducted five presentations reaching approximately 150 students. They have also set up dates to present at middle school classes.
The chapter is also in the process of organizing a large alcohol and drug-free excursion. The chapter actively participated in the planning of the countywide Sober Haunted House Tour of Terror, the New Yearâs Eve Lock-in and the FNL rally at Great America, April 5th, 2003. They are also actively involved as youth representatives on the Traffic Safe Communities Network, Alcohol and Impaired Driving Workgroup. This particular chapter receives funding from Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE), which is tobacco tax money funneledthrough the Office of Education. With this money, students have been able to purchase a digital camera, printer, and tickets to the FNL Great America rally. The digital camera is giving students the opportunity to develop their high tech and photographic skills. It is also used to document their activities throughout the year. Activists have also attended the TUPE funded youth leadership training organized by the San Jose Cityâs Youth Anti-tobacco Collaborative Youth Leadership Institute held in February, 2003.
Yerba Buena High School
This chapter has been in existence since Red Ribbon Week in October 2002. Approximately 50 students have been meeting weekly to discuss how to organize Red Ribbon Week, presenting bi-lingual skits on alcohol awareness and participating in Cinco de Mayo. Members of the chapter created special FNL Christmas Ornaments for their school Christmas tree and NCADD's tree at Christmas in the Park at Cesar Chavez Park. These ornaments had alcohol and drug-free messages on them such as "YB Drug-free?" and "don't drink and drive" and "you smoke, you croak." Over 150 YB students were actively engaged in promoting their drug-free Xmas tree.
FNL activists are preparing a community service activity, an Easter Egg Hunt for young children. They will be putting alcohol and drug-free messages on props and eggs to reach at least 150 elementary school children from their local area. The Yerba Buena chapter was actively involved in the Sober Haunted House, Tour of Terror, participated in the planning of and attended the New Year's Eve Lock-in, and are planning to participate in the FNL rally at Great America in April.
To start a Friday Night Live or Club Live Chapter you have to be a group of teens who are already working with an adult advisor - gather some great ideas on how to reduce underage drinking and drunk driving (crashes), tobacco use, and/or other drug use in your school or community and you will be well on the way to becoming a Chapter: call Bobby Lorilla (408) 292-7292, Bobby@NCADDSiliconValley.org
